QuickBooks: A Practical Model of Software Productization
Allyn W. Brehl, President of CM IT Solutions of NW Columbus
All product software development is tough, but "application" product software
development is even tougher. Application here means end-user applications
which are different from embedded applications. User preferences and
configurability are big factors in achieving a broad market applicability. Al
will use the QuickBooks product to demonstrate some of the issues and some of
the approaches Intuit has utilized in achieving broad market fit.
Al owns CM IT Solutions of NW Columbus, a computer services company supporting
small to medium size businesses in the Columbus area. He also owns and
continues to operate BOSS Consulting; a business coaching and performance
consulting company. Al left ABB, Inc. as the vice president of the AccuRay
business. His career at ABB involved design, development, and product
management of software products for the industrial automation market. He is
a native of Columbus and has been in the Information Technology field for over
35 years. He graduated from Ohio Dominican University with a Bachelor of
Science in Mathematics and received his Master of Science in Computer Science
from The Ohio State University. Al is also a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor,
a member of TechColumbus, and of several local chambers. He also volunteers at
Riverside Hospital.
